Okay… so maybe not quite that far back.
Fast-forward to the earlyish days of the Internet. Universities and colleges were starting to be connected. Bored students, and those seeking to have an excuse to goof off and skip lectures, brought their hobbies into the computer era, and with the interconnectivity of the Internet, a wider audience than ever before.
From the collective minds of a number of said bored college kids came a pile of wet dirt. From the pile of wet dirt, more commonly known as MUD, worlds were sculpted: Multi User Dungeons. Large worlds sprung up, some based on favourite genres and settings, others, the personal creation of the owner. Within these worlds there are characters to create, areas to explore, and a multitude of monsters and critters to slay with wondrous weapons. Interact with other characters, talk, give them a pat on the back or, if so inclined, slide a dagger between their ribs.
The beauty of these worlds is not in the eye of the beholder, for there are no graphics, but in the mind of the reader. Areas, items, and creatures come alive in vivid textual descriptions, your actions typed as commands.
The large hardwood doors open up into the entrance hall of the castle. The vaulted ceiling towers high above you, from which a crystal chandelier hangs. A carpeted stairway winds its way up to the second floor. Works of art line the stone walls and vases sit atop pedestals leading towards the staircase.
Though, not all is beautiful… for in the darkness, evil lurks.
Soulless eyes of black, peer out from the leering skull of this enormous, mutilated wolf. A feral growl emanates from within a shrivelled throat. Mangy fur is matted with clotted blood and pus, seeping from numerous pustular wounds. Gouges and decaying flesh reveal a decrepit ribcage and atrophied musculature. Putrescent bile drips from long, bared fangs.
Some worlds are described in intricate details; others leave much to the imagination. Is that room simply bare, or does it contain some secret — a passage or a trap?
Are you the knight in shining armour, the sneaky thief, or perhaps a priest seeking balance in the world? Does darkness thrive in your heart as a pilferer of the dead and commander of the necromantic arts? Do you have the grace of an elf, or the stalwart stubbornness of a dwarf?
Worlds and adventures wait beyond your wildest imaginations. Do not simply just witness a story unfolding before you, be a part of it. Tell your tale and leave your mark on a world today.
