SuperSport to Introduce Dedicated eSorts Channel
It seems that SuperSport's experimentation with eSports broadcasts has been successful enough to warrant the addition of the GINX eSports channel. Multiple Eleauge tournments as well as the IEM World championships were previously broadcast, but were limited to highlight reels and online broadcasts.
According to the announcement, "Live blocks will be broadcast on DStv with Mondays and Fridays featuring live show “The Bridge” and Saturdays and Sundays featuring five-hour broadcast slots". We can interpret this to mean that the channel will not be open 24/7 and that we'll get a combination of live shows, discussion panels and highlight reels for viewing.
This bodes well for the gaming scene in South Africa as we look at the sentiments of the CEOs involved. Gideon Khobane, CEO of SuperSport, stated "The deal with GINX is a massive leap forward and signals our intention to embrace the newest sport out there. There is a real buzz around eSports and we want to be part of that", while Michael Bakker, CEO of GINX, stated "We’re delighted to bring GINX eSports TV to South Africa. It’s an exciting time to be launching in a country with such a rapidly growing eSports scene. GINX eSports TV will provide South African fans with the biggest and best events from around the globe. We also look forward to working closely with MultiChoice and SuperSport to broadcast local eSports events"
The big guns are recognizing and embracing the potential for growth here in ZA, which is an encouraging sign giving our own growing gaming scene. Hopefully GINX TV helps to develope our local scene by providing a platform for broadcasting local tournaments. The future looks bright.
Firestorm Joins Injustice 2 Roster
It wouldn't be a weekly wrap-up without an Injustice 2 reveal, and this week we got our first look at Firestorm, the flame-spewing, nuclear powerhouse. In addition to his reveal, we also get a sense of his playstyle.
Firestorm looks to be a zoning-heavy character, with a multitude of quick projectiles and the ability to turn the entire floor into a hazard that lock the opponent into place. This opens up his close-range abilities which seem to be focused around dealing quick damage, while forcing your opponent into range, making him a strong character for strategic players. We also see a new stage and transition involving Killer Croc in the trailer, both looking fantastic.
In other news, micro-transactions were announced for the game. These micro-transactions will be similar to those found in Overwatch in that they influence cosmetics and not gameplay. Players can purchase boxes that hold gear, used to customise characters, which themselves have varying levels of rarity.
Overwatch Changes on The Way
During a Reddit AMA Jeff Kaplan, director of Overwatch, hinted at some big changes for Lucio and Winston as well as minor additions for Widowmaker and possible tweaks to the loot box system.
Winston, being the least picked hero in the game, is getting the cooldown of his barriers reduced. The cooldown on the barriers previously activated as the barrier dissipated but now starts as soon as it's placed. This means Winston can place barriers more frequently, which would make him more useless in both offensive pushes and defensive holds. It will be interesting to see how these changes, along with the introduction of Orisa, who can also place barriers, goes on to change the meta.
Lucio may be getting tweaked due to the fact that he's a "must pick" hero. Kaplan stated "We feel like a lot of players feel like he is a "must have" in comps but he also doesn't feel super impactful to play. We're trying some ideas to make him more engaging to play while making him a little less obvious/must pick. We'll see if those changes make it to the PTR". This could mean Lucio will be receiving a damage buff, healing buff or an entirely reworked ability, like we saw with Symmetra
A new legendary skin for Widowmaker, who hasn't received any through the seasonal events, was hinted at with Kaplan claiming that it would be "worth the wait". Lastly, loot boxes may soon be gifted to players with Kaplan mentioning they were working on this sort of system in some capacity
Prey Trailer Shows Off Enemy Variety
The Mimic, which disguises itself as everyday objects and possibly humans, ambushes the player. The Weaver isn't shown in gameplay, but we can assume creates the variety of enemy known as the Phantom when it comes into contact with a human corpse. Phantoms are humanoid enemies capable of firing projectiles ad seem to be the most dangerous of the lot. Lastly, we see the telepath, capable of mind controlling weaker organisms. These are not the only varieties of enemy present in the game, so it's safe to assume there are even more dangerous enemies awaiting players.
Prey is set to release on 5th May 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.4
